Art as a Therapy

Writer's picture: Yviana ReyesYviana Reyes

The subconscious is accessed through art, which then helps to stimulate personal development from the inside out. Its purpose is to serve as a means of communication that extends beyond the use of words. Consequently, it makes communication possible for those individuals who have difficulty finding the suitable words. This holds especially true in the event of a traumatic experience. People have the misconception that since art originated in the mind, it must reveal something about the mental state of the artist. This is not the case.

It is beneficial for the patient to internalize his or her struggles or traumatic experiences. The next thing for him to do is to reconnect with himself and refocus his attention on the steps he needs to do in order to tackle his issues from the inside out. Individuals undergoing integrative psychotherapy have access to a diverse range of techniques that can help them better understand themselves.

A person who uses art as therapy might gain insight into themselves and their world, and then use that knowledge in practical ways by putting what they've learned into practice.
